The EU-funded project WiLiMan-ID ( https://www.wiliman-id.eu/ ) is pleased to announce the launch of the brand new short film series " The Deadly Five“ . This series aims to raise awareness about five critical animal diseases identified as high-priority threats. Each film in the series focuses on a different disease and the experts working to research and combat it, highlighting the risks each disease poses to both animal and human health, as well as strategies for mitigating their impact.
"With this series, we aim to draw attention to the complexity of animal infectious diseases and the global efforts to monitor and control them. Our work at WiLiMan-ID is crucial in understanding and containing the economic and health risks posed by these pathogens," said Christine Citti , WiLiMan-ID project coordinator.
The video series "The Deadly Five" examines:
- Avian Influenza (AI): A highly contagious viral disease affecting poultry, wild birds, and occasionally mammals, with pandemic potential.
- African Swine Fever (ASF): A devastating non-zoonotic disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, with severe economic consequences.
- African Horse Sickness (AHS): A fatal disease affecting horses, mules, donkeys, and zebras, transmitted by midges.
- West Nile Virus (WNV) and Usutu Virus (USUV): Mosquito-borne viruses circulating between birds and mosquitoes, with potential implications for humans and horses.
- Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD): A fatal prion disease affecting deer populations, recently emerging in Northern Europe.
Most of these diseases, including African Swine Fever and African Horse Sickness, cause significant economic losses in agriculture. Furthermore, three of these diseases – Avian Influenza, West Nile Fever, and Chronic Wasting Disease – pose a threat to human health. Each film delves into the latest scientific findings on these diseases, shedding light on their surveillance, prevention, and control.
