New Era of Obesity Therapy: Slimming Injections in Focus

The so-called slimming injections have become one of the most discussed topics in medicine, as reported in the current issue of the health magazine Apotheken Umschau (8A/2025). These medications, originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, have long been a beacon of hope in obesity therapy. Research teams worldwide, including at the Helmholtz Centre, are working on new active ingredients that have the potential to further revolutionize the treatment of severe obesity. The active ingredients, so-called GLP-1 receptor agonists, mimic the body's own intestinal hormones such as GLP-1 (Glucagon-like Peptide-1), which are released during food intake. They promote insulin secretion, slow gastric emptying, and reduce appetite. What began as a side effect is now the main effect: significant weight loss. For example, semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) leads to a weight loss of about 15 percent within a year in studies, while tirzepatide (Mounjaro) achieves up to 20 percent. New candidates such as retatrutide, a triple agonist that also acts on glucagon and GIP receptors, show...

From Personal Crisis to Scientific Revolution: Professor Hyland Shapes Trauma Research

In an insightful interview published today in the journal Brain Medicine by Genomic Press, Professor Philip Hyland recounts his remarkable journey from personal challenges to becoming a globally recognized authority on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His groundbreaking research on complex PTSD has profoundly reshaped the World Health Organization's diagnostic criteria, influencing how clinicians worldwide assess and treat trauma survivors. Hyland's path began in his late teens and early twenties when he grappled with severe anxiety, depression, and a sense of dissatisfaction, despite lacking typical risk factors for mental health issues. This personal crisis ignited his interest in psychology, laying the foundation for a career that would revolutionize the understanding of trauma psychology. His fascination with the human psyche led him from childhood interests in physics and astronomy to psychology, where he found answers to his questions using scientific methods. Particularly controversial...

Innovent Biologics Receives FDA Approval for IND Application of Oral GLP-1R Agonist IBI3032

The biopharmaceutical company Innovent Biologics has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Investigational New Drug (IND) application to initiate a Phase 1 study for the oral GLP-1 receptor agonist IBI3032. The drug, developed by Innovent, is intended to offer new treatment options for metabolic diseases dependent on insulin, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. IBI3032 is a small molecule administered orally that selectively activates the GLP-1 receptor. It delays gastric emptying, suppresses appetite, and promotes insulin secretion. Preclinical studies showed that the agent possesses superior pharmacokinetic and physicochemical properties compared to similar compounds. In animal models, IBI3032 achieved up to tenfold higher oral exposure at equivalent doses, improved efficacy, and good tolerability. It achieved comparable therapeutic effects at lower doses. The Phase 1 studies will be conducted concurrently in the USA and China and are expected to commence in the second half of 2025. Healthy individuals will participate in the studies...

German students excel at the 37th International Olympiad in Informatics in Bolivia

At the 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Sucre, Bolivia, young talents from Germany once again demonstrated their exceptional skills. Among the 330 participants from over 80 countries, Maksym Shvedchenko from Gilching near Munich secured a bronze medal, while Pascal Atzler from Hünfeld received an "Honorable Mention." Further members of the German team were Selma Hübner from Neustadt in Holstein and Shuheng Wei from Heidelberg. This year's IOI challenged participants with demanding tasks that required both theoretical knowledge at a university level and precise programming skills. In two five-hour exams, the young people worked on complex problems, including the cost-effective transmission of data about dinosaur findings in Bolivia and helping a llama survive in the Andes. Maksym Shvedchenko, who had already won a bronze medal in Egypt in 2024, confirmed his consistency at an international level. The other team members also brought impressive previous achievements: Shvedchenko…

3100 Euros in Citizen's Allowance for Ukrainian Refugees in Germany: An Example from Hanover

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, many Ukrainians have sought protection in Germany. In addition to a residence permit according to § 24 of the Residence Act, they receive access to social benefits such as Citizen's Allowance (Bürgergeld), which has been available for Ukrainian refugees since June 2022. For them, it replaces the benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act and offers more comprehensive support, including statutory health insurance and higher standard rates. But how much is the Citizen's Allowance for a family of four in Germany, specifically in a city like Hanover? This article examines the exact composition of the monthly payout for a Ukrainian refugee family with two children aged 10 and 16, taking into account housing costs, utilities, and health insurance. Citizen's Allowance: Basics and Entitlement Citizen's Allowance is the central basic income support for employable individuals in Germany and includes standard benefits for subsistence as well as the assumption of appropriate…

Radon exposure in East Germany and potential health effects on the male population

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive noble gas, is formed by the decay of uranium and radium in soil and rocks. In Germany, radon concentrations vary greatly by region, with Eastern Germany, particularly regions such as the Ore Mountains, the Thuringian Forest, and parts of the Bavarian Forest, showing elevated levels due to geological peculiarities like uranium-containing rock and high soil gas permeability. According to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), the average radon concentration in living spaces in Eastern Germany is about 75 becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m³), compared to 50 Bq/m³ in Western Germany. In certain areas, like the Ore Mountains, indoor concentrations can exceed 300 Bq/m³, and in individual cases, even reach 1,000 Bq/m³. These elevated levels pose a relevant health risk, especially for lung cancer, which is considered the second most common cause after smoking. Radon enters buildings through leaky areas in foundations, such as cracks or unsealed pipe penetrations, and accumulates in poorly ventilated rooms, especially basements,…

Conference Board reports decline in Employment Trends Index in July

New York, August 4, 2025 – The Conference Board's Employment Trends Index (ETI) fell to 107.55 in July 2025, from a revised 108.19 in June. The ETI, a leading indicator of wage growth, signals that a decline in employment is likely when the index falls. The slight decline in July indicates a stable but potentially risky labor market situation. The decline was caused by negative developments in four of the eight ETI components: the proportion of consumers who say jobs are hard to find (up from 17.2% in June to 18.9% in July), the proportion of companies with job openings (down from 36% to 33%), employment in the temporary help industry (down by 4,400 jobs), and the proportion of involuntary part-time workers (up from 16.5% to 17.1%). On the other hand, the initial claims component had a positive impact…
