TBE: Experts warn of increasing danger

The number of TBE cases in Germany is expected to have surpassed last year's record high in 2025. This was announced by the National Reference Laboratory for Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE). So far, 693 confirmed cases have been registered, with around 100 suspected cases still under investigation. In 2024, 695 illnesses were reported – which was already one of the highest annual figures ever recorded. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Dobler, head of the National Reference Laboratory for TBE at the Institute of Microbiology of the Bundeswehr in Munich, and Prof. Dr. Ute Mackenstedt from the University of Hohenheim presented the development at a press conference. Both refer to 25 years of TBE statistics and current observations. The highest number of reports continues to come from Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, accounting for about 80 percent of cases.
