Commentary: The Mask Affair – Where Nepotism Becomes Corruption

The new revelations in the mask affair surrounding Jens Spahn mark a low point in German politics. What began as hectic crisis management during the Corona pandemic is now turning out to be a textbook case of systematic nepotism that clearly crosses the line into corruption. As the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and a close ally of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Spahn is not only in the spotlight himself but also burdens the entire CDU government. The latest findings from the unredacted Sudhof report and investigations like those by Spiegel TV are alarming. In August 2020, the Ministry of Health under Spahn awarded a 30-million-euro contract for surgical masks to SimpleBreath – a GbR (general partnership) that was barely a week old, not registered in the commercial register, and had no expertise.
