Abbott’s Dissolving Stent Receives FDA Approval for Arteries

Abbott (NYSE: ABT) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Esprit™ BTK Everolimus Eluting Resorbable Scaffold System (Esprit BTK System), a breakthrough innovation for people with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) below-the-knee (BTK). The Esprit BTK System is designed to keep arteries open and deliver a drug (Everolimus) to support vessel healing prior to completely dissolving. Until today, there were no stents or drug-coated balloons approved for use below the knee in the U.S. The standard of care has been balloon angioplasty, which relies on a small balloon delivered via a catheter to the blockage to compress it against the arterial wall, opening the vessel and restoring blood flow. However, blockages treated only with balloon angioplasty have poor short- and long-term results, and in many instances the vessels become blocked again, requiring additional treatment. The…

Das Unternehmen erhielt zuvor die CE-Kennzeichnung gemäß den EU-MDR-Vorschriften, da das Kronos-Gerät nun weltweit im Handel erhältlich ist. (DGKL News). Braunes Fett kann Kalorien verbrennen – jetzt haben Forschende einen wichtigen Mechanismus aufgeklärt. Braunes Fettgewebe (BAT) hat eine besondere Aufgabe: Es hilft dabei, Kalorien aus der Nahrung in Wärme umzuwandeln. Das ist vor allem dann hilfreich, wenn der Organismus kalten Temperaturen ausgesetzt ist. Lange Zeit ging man davon aus, dass nur kleine Tiere und Neugeborene braunes Fett besitzen. Neue Forschungsergebnisse zeigen jedoch, dass eine bestimmte Anzahl von Erwachsenen ihr braunes Fett ein Leben lang behält. Ein internationales Forschungsteam hat jetzt herausgefunden, dass braunes Fett einen bisher unbekannten eingebauten Mechanismus besitzt, der es kurz nach seiner Aktivierung wieder abschaltet. Unter normalen Bedigungen ist diese biochemische Vorrichtung durchaus sinnvoll: Würde der Kalorienkiller nicht wieder abgeschaltet, wäre der Organismus im endlosen Abnehmmodus gefangen. Biomarkers for treatment of bone marrow tumours

CAR T cell therapy has proven effective in treating various haematological cancers. However, not all patients respond equally well to treatment. In a recent clinical study, researchers from the University of Leipzig Medical Center and the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology identified several biomarkers that are associated with the response to CAR T cell therapy in multiple myeloma, a malignant tumour disease in the bone marrow. The findings have been published in the prestigious journal Nature Cancer. CAR T cell therapy involves the collection of immune cells called T cells from the patient. These are genetically modified in the laboratory to carry a receptor on their surface. This receptor enables the immune cell to recognise the cancer cells and initiate their destruction.
