Gerissene und beschädigte Menisken infolge eines Traumas sind sehr häufige Knieverletzungen, die Schmerzen und Bewegungseinschränkungen verursachen und zu Osteoarthritis führen können. Meniskusverletzungen können eine Operation erfordern, um die Gewebeschäden zu beheben und die Beweglichkeit wiederherzustellen. In einem Artikel, der im Fachblatt Applied Biosciences erschien, wird die biomechanische Prüfung eines 3D-gedruckten Meniskus beschrieben. Insbesondere interessierte die Forschenden, ob der gedruckte Meniskus die Festigkeit und Haltbarkeit besitzt, um Meniskusrisse wirksam zu reparieren und die Biomechanik des Knies wiederherzustellen. Die Publikation will „Schritte aufzeigen, die erforderlich sind, um neuartige Meniskusreparaturvorrichtungen zu testen, bevor man zu Tierversuchen übergeht“.
