DKFZ certifies Center for Personalized Oncology (ZPO)

The German Cancer Society has certified the newly founded Center for Personalized Oncology (ZPO) at University Medicine Mainz. The new center, embedded within the structures of the University Center for Tumor Diseases (UCT) Mainz, is another milestone in improving the care of tumor patients in Rhineland-Palatinate. The goal is to enable those affected by cancer to receive the best possible individualized treatment. This is based on a detailed understanding of the mechanisms of tumor development. The ZPO is the first certified center of its kind in Rhineland-Palatinate and one of 16 certified centers for personalized medicine in Germany that offer these complex examinations with direct recommendations for patients.

Stress affects the brain and psyche

Chronic stress affects the immune system and the brain. Researchers at UZH show that under stress, a specific enzyme from immune cells enters the brain. In mice, it causes them to withdraw and avoid social contact. This newly discovered connection between body and mind in stress-related mental illnesses could lead to new treatments for depression.

Epigenetic-Based PCR Test Could Detect Difficult-to-Diagnose Breast Tumor

Scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (NSW, Australia) have identified new DNA markers based on epigenetics that could provide additional diagnostic information for phyllodes tumors.

Epigenetic changes are alterations in gene activity without changing the DNA sequence itself, and they can be influenced by environmental factors. A common epigenetic process is DNA methylation, where methyl groups attach to segments of DNA, altering gene expression.
