AbbVie suffers major setback in schizophrenia research

US pharmaceutical giant AbbVie is going through turbulent times. The company had to announce that its promising schizophrenia drug Emraclidin failed to meet expectations in a crucial Phase 2 study with 752 patients[1]. The stock subsequently plummeted by more than 12 percent, corresponding to a market value loss of approximately $40 billion[1].

This setback is particularly bitter in light of the recent $8.7 billion acquisition of Cerevel Therapeutics, from whose portfolio Emraclidin originated[1]. The development highlights the challenges in the lucrative psychotropic drug market.

The global market for antidepressants was valued at $16.99 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to over $37 billion by 2036[2]. In parallel, the antipsychotics market, which stood at $16.14 billion in 2023, is also projected to see further growth[3].

For AbbVie, this setback comes at an unfavorable time. The company already recorded a dramatic profit drop of almost 60 percent in 2023, mainly due to the patent expiry of its blockbuster drug Humira[4]. Total revenue fell to $54.3 billion, while net profit plummeted to $4.9 billion[4].

The development of new psychotropic drugs remains a major challenge. An estimated 2.8 million people in the US alone live with schizophrenia[1]. While competitor Bristol Myers Squibb benefits from AbbVie's failure and records stock gains, AbbVie must rethink its strategy[1].

The market for psychiatric drugs is undergoing a transformation. New therapeutic approaches, such as the use of psychedelics in depression treatment, are gaining importance[5]. Australia has become the first country to approve MDMA and psilocybin for therapeutic purposes, while other countries are still hesitant[5].

Despite the setback, AbbVie's Chief Scientific Officer Roopal Thakkar remains confident and announces a thorough analysis of the study results[1]. The future will show whether the company can maintain its position in the highly competitive market for psychotropic drugs.
