Analysis of cumulative total spending on refugees from 2015 to 2025

Since the refugee crisis of 2015, Germany has provided significant funds for the reception, care, and integration of refugees. This analysis calculates the cumulative total federal spending on refugees, including social benefits such as asylum seeker benefits and citizen's allowance, as well as the costs per taxpayer. It also contrasts planned cuts in social benefits for German citizens. The calculation is based on available data up to June 2025 and is objective and value-free. 1. Cumulative total spending on refugees (2015–2025) Federal spending on refugees includes asylum seeker benefits, citizen's allowance, integration measures, accommodation, care, and addressing the causes of flight. According to available sources, the costs can be estimated as follows: States and municipalities also bear costs, some of which are refinanced by the federal government. An X post estimates the total costs (federal, state, and municipal) at 310–500 billion euros, with the federal government covering 200–250 billion euros. For this analysis, the conservative estimate of 248.7 billion euros for the federal government is used…

Power struggle between Donald Trump and the US intelligence agencies – A conflict with far-reaching consequences

Washington, June 27, 2025 – Since his return to the White House in January 2025, US President Donald Trump has ignited an open conflict with the powerful US intelligence agencies, including the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). This power struggle, which had its roots in Trump's first term (2017–2021), has reached a new dimension in recent months. From layoffs and public criticism to spectacular defection incidents – the tensions between the president and the Intelligence Community threaten to destabilize the national security of the USA and its international relations. Background: A history of mistrust Donald Trump's relationship with the US intelligence agencies has always been marked by skepticism. Even during his first election campaign in 2016, he rejected reports from the CIA and FBI that spoke of Russian interference in the US election, calling such assessments "ridiculous." After taking office in 2017, he announced that he would reduce daily intelligence briefings…

Life-threatening risks with alternative practitioners: legal loopholes under scrutiny

  • News

Treatment by alternative practitioners enjoys great popularity in Germany. Around 40,000 alternative practitioners offer their services, ranging from homeopathy and acupuncture to alternative cancer therapies. But behind the facade of "gentle medicine" lie considerable dangers. Serious health damage or even deaths occur again and again because alternative practitioners make incorrect diagnoses, carry out risky treatments, or dissuade patients from seeking vital conventional medical therapies. A detailed look at specific cases, legal regulations, and their loopholes shows: The profession of the alternative practitioner is a minefield that urgently needs reform. Compared to strictly regulated medicine, glaring weaknesses in the Heilpraktikergesetz (Law on Alternative Practitioners) are revealed, exposing patients to unreasonable risk. Fatal consequences: Examples from practice A particularly tragic case occurred in 2015 in Bracht, North Rhine-Westphalia. An alternative practitioner treated several cancer patients with an experimental substance called 3-bromopyruvate. Three patients died within a few days…

Declining importance of the BND: Germany's intelligence service in the international shadow

  • News

The Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany's foreign intelligence service, faces increasing marginalization in the international geopolitical context in 2025. Once celebrated as a central pillar of Western intelligence cooperation, the service struggles with structural deficits, technological backwardness, and political restrictions that weaken its role in the global security environment. Experts, reports from the Federal Court of Auditors, and discussions on platforms like X paint a picture of an intelligence service losing influence compared to partners like the CIA, MI6, or Israel's Mossad. The reasons are manifold: lack of funding, bureaucratic constraints, scandals, and the changed geopolitical landscape. Historical context and current challenges Founded in 1956, the BND was an indispensable partner for the USA and NATO during the Cold War, particularly through its expertise in the Soviet Union and the GDR. After 1990, the focus shifted to combating terrorism, cyber threats, and hybrid warfare. However, in 2025, the service faces challenges that…

Reintroduction of conscription: Challenges and opportunities for the healthcare sector

The reintroduction of conscription in Germany, which has been intensely debated again since its suspension in 2011, would have far-reaching consequences for the healthcare sector. In view of the acute shortage of staff in hospitals, nursing homes, and emergency services, as well as the increased security policy requirements due to the "Zeitenwende" (turning point), the healthcare sector faces complex problems, but also potential opportunities. The debate, sparked by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and the new parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces, Eva Högl, shows that compulsory military service would profoundly affect not only the Bundeswehr but also the healthcare system. Historical Context and Current Discussion Conscription was suspended in 2011, which also led to the abolition of civilian service, which was often performed in the healthcare sector. At that time, about 90,000 young men annually completed their civilian service, many of them in hospitals, nursing homes, or emergency services. Since then, the healthcare sector has suffered from a chronic shortage of skilled workers, which has been exacerbated by the Corona pandemic and demographic change. According to the German Hospital Association (DKG)...

Waste of taxpayer money in the Federal Ministry of Health: Mask affair and Corona measures in focus

  • News

The Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is once again under criticism, as reports of wasted taxpayer money in connection with the Corona pandemic and other measures are fueling public debate. In particular, the procurement of protective masks, citizen tests, and questionable funding projects raise questions about the efficiency and transparency in the use of public funds. According to the Black Book of the Federation of Taxpayers and other sources, the financial missteps amount to several billion euros, which have arisen from mismanagement and insufficient controls. Mask Affair: A Multi-Billion Dollar Drama A central accusation concerns the over-procurement of protective masks during the Corona pandemic. Under the leadership of the then Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn, 276 million FFP2 and KN95 masks, as well as 78 million surgical masks, were procured from 535 contracting partners in 2020 under the so-called "Open House procedure." The Federal Court of Auditors estimates that this measure has cost taxpayers up to 7 billion euros in unnecessary costs. A...

New approach against gliomas: FAM111B identified as a target

A research team led by Dr. Quan Du from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University and Westlake University has identified the protein FAM111B as a key factor in the progression of gliomas, the deadliest brain tumors. The study, published in the "Chinese Neurosurgical Journal" on May 19, 2025, shows for the first time that FAM111B promotes tumor growth and aggressiveness by activating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. This makes FAM111B a promising biomarker and therapeutic target. Gliomas are the most common and aggressive primary brain tumors in adults, with poor survival rates despite intensive therapies. The researchers analyzed databases such as The Cancer Genome Atlas and the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas and found that FAM111B is highly overexpressed in glioma tissue compared to healthy tissue. Higher FAM111B levels correlated with advanced tumor grade, older patient age, and shorter survival time. Experiments with glioma cell lines and mice confirmed that FAM111B overexpression enhances cell proliferation, invasion, and migration…

Survey tool developed to improve epilepsy diagnostics and research in dogs.

  • News

Epilepsy and dyskinesia are neurological disorders in dogs whose clinical symptoms can overlap. An international team led by Professor Andrea Fischer, a neurologist at the Small Animal Clinic of LMU, and Professor Hannes Lohi, a molecular geneticist at the University of Helsinki, has now developed a tool with a novel multilingual questionnaire that standardizes the description and classification of seizures in dogs and significantly improves the collection of large databases. This topic is of particular relevance, as epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological disorder in dogs and has a genetic component. Neurological symptoms and seizures can also occur in the acute phase of so-called werewolf syndrome, which has been increasingly observed in dogs in the past year. "This survey not only collects high-quality data – it also enables the classification of epilepsy based on practical symptom descriptions and provides owners of affected dogs with clear video examples. Thus…

PIEZO2: Key Role Discovered in Coronary Arteries

  • News

A research team led by Dr. Annette Hammes from the Max Delbrück Center has published in the journal “Nature Cardiovascular Research” that the ion channel PIEZO2 not only processes touch stimuli in the skin but is also crucial for the development of the coronary arteries. These findings could improve the understanding of congenital heart defects and enable new therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular diseases. In collaboration with the teams of Professor Gary Lewin, Holger Gerhardt, and Norbert Hübner, lead author Dr. Mireia Pampols-Perez showed in mouse models that without PIEZO2, the coronary arteries grow incorrectly: the vessels remain too narrow or branch atypically, impairing the oxygen supply to the heart muscle. Similar malformations occurred in mice with overactive PIEZO2, which is associated with Marden-Walker syndrome in humans. In both cases, the heart muscle thickened, especially in the left ventricle, presumably due to impaired vascular growth. Genome-wide studies suggest that PIEZO2 mutations in humans can lead to heart failure, high blood pressure, or...

Gaza: SOS Children's Villages Warn of Forgotten Crisis

While the conflict between Israel and Iran captures international attention, the catastrophic situation of children and families in Gaza is increasingly being forgotten, warn SOS Children's Villages. The humanitarian situation is devastating: massive attacks, extreme food shortages, and growing malnutrition mark daily life. Children, in particular, suffer from acute severe malnutrition, which is fatal if untreated. Many are physically and psychologically exhausted, traumatized by displacement and violence. Conflicts and deaths repeatedly occur at food distribution points due to chaotic conditions as desperate parents try to feed their families. The lack of fuel further exacerbates the crisis. According to UN figures, 80 percent of intensive care and maternity units are at risk of closure, and plastic waste is increasingly being burned for cooking. In a makeshift camp near Khan Younis, SOS Children's Villages is caring for orphaned children after their children's village in Rafah was destroyed. Supplies are severely limited here, and the fear...
