Gaza: SOS Children's Villages Warn of Forgotten Crisis

While the conflict between Israel and Iran captures international attention, the catastrophic situation of children and families in Gaza is increasingly being forgotten, warn SOS Children's Villages. The humanitarian situation is devastating: massive attacks, extreme food shortages, and growing malnutrition mark daily life. Children, in particular, suffer from acute severe malnutrition, which is fatal if untreated. Many are physically and psychologically exhausted, traumatized by displacement and violence. Conflicts and deaths repeatedly occur at food distribution points due to chaotic conditions as desperate parents try to feed their families. The lack of fuel further exacerbates the crisis. According to UN figures, 80 percent of intensive care and maternity units are at risk of closure, and plastic waste is increasingly being burned for cooking. In a makeshift camp near Khan Younis, SOS Children's Villages is caring for orphaned children after their children's village in Rafah was destroyed. Supplies are severely limited here, and the fear...

Asklepios opens state-of-the-art logistics hub in Frankfurt

The Asklepios Kliniken Group will open a new logistics hub in Frankfurt-Fechenheim starting in the third quarter of 2025, which will secure the supply of clinics and facilities in the Central and temporarily Southern regions. The hub will supply facilities such as the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg, the Zentralklinik Bad Berka, and the Bad Neustadt an der Saale campus. External facilities can also use the logistics structures. The…

ÄFI calls for comprehensive review of the Corona pandemic

The Doctors for Individual Vaccination Decisions (ÄFI) welcome the planned establishment of a committee of inquiry by the German Bundestag to review the Corona pandemic, but criticize the draft motion by CDU/CSU and SPD as insufficient. After years of demands from ÄFI, which already called for such a committee in March 2023, they see this as a necessary, albeit late, step. While a committee of inquiry would have been more effective, the committee is a step forward to address the loss of trust in health policy and overcome societal divisions. ÄFI emphasizes that a ruthless analysis of the pandemic measures is essential to avoid future mistakes. The issue of vaccination, in particular, is neglected in the draft motion, even though vaccinations represent a massive infringement on bodily integrity and vaccine skepticism has increased among the population. ÄFI criticizes the one-sided focus on vaccinations as a solution for a respiratory illness and calls for an investigation into why…

Angusta for induction of labor: BfArM reminds physicians of dosage recommendations and contraindications

  • News

The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) reminds physicians that when using the drug Angusta (active ingredient Misoprostol) for labor induction, the specifications in the professional and patient information must be strictly observed. In particular, the instructions on dosage and contraindications must be taken into account without gaps. The background is a cluster of reports in which serious side effects are reported. In these cases, Angusta was used outside the approved dosage and despite existing contraindications. In one case, resulting in the death of the unborn child; in another case, resulting in the death of the mother. Angusta is only approved for labor induction. Its use during an already started labor or with regular and painful contractions is contraindicated. Angusta may only be administered by trained medical personnel in hospitals where continuous monitoring of the fetus and uterus is possible. The BfArM has current information on dosage, dosage intervals, and specific contraindications at the following link...

ECB tests Ripple XRP: A milestone for the financial world

The European Central Bank (ECB) has recently taken a significant step towards integrating modern blockchain technologies into the traditional financial system. As part of a pilot project, the ECB is testing the technology of the XRP Ledger, an open-source blockchain developed by Ripple, to revolutionize the settlement of securities and central bank money. This move marks a turning point in the financial world and could lay the foundation for a more efficient, secure, and sustainable future for the financial sector. Why is this test groundbreaking? Because it shows the willingness of one of the world's most influential institutions not only to evaluate innovative technologies but also to actively implement them in practice. The financial world has been at a crossroads for years. On the one hand, traditional systems offer stability and trust; on the other hand, they suffer from inefficiencies, high costs, and long settlement times, especially for cross-border transactions. Blockchain technologies like the XRP Ledger promise to solve these problems by enabling real-time transactions,...

Saliva analysis could reveal risk for cancer, heart disease, or Parkinson's

  • News

A study led by a team from the University of the Basque Country (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, EHU) has identified hundreds of molecular markers in saliva that could indicate the risk of serious diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Their findings lay the groundwork for the development of a powerful, non-invasive tool for early diagnosis and precision medicine. "Saliva is one of the most accessible biological fluids, yet it is still underutilized in clinical practice," said José Ramón Bilbao, Professor of Medical Genetics at the EHU and one of the study's lead authors. "Our findings show that molecular markers present in saliva can reflect systemic pathological processes outside the oral cavity." It is widely known that saliva samples are used for genetic testing, for example, to determine...

Deeper sleep is more likely to lead to eureka moments

"Sleeping on it," particularly falling into a deeper sleep than a nap, may help people gain insights into certain types of problems. This is according to a study published on June 26 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology by Anika Löwe, Marit Petzka, Maria Tzegka, and Nicolas Schuck from the University of Hamburg and colleagues. Sometimes, when solving a problem they are working on, people experience a sudden "eureka moment," leading to sudden insights or breakthroughs. Scientists have not yet had their own "aha!" moment of insight into how this might work, although sleep appears to play a role. To better understand how sleep can lead to insights in problem-solving, the authors of this pre-registered study asked 90 people to follow a series of dots on a screen. Participants were given instructions for a seemingly simple task where they just had to follow the dots...

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly undermined the American public's trust in U.S. health institutions like the CDC

Four discrete cross-sectional studies among adults in the United States from 2020 to 2024 show that the proportion of U.S. adults who have high confidence in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has fallen from 82 percent in February 2020 to a low of 56 percent in June 2022. This is according to a study published on June 26, 2025, in the open-access journal PLOS Global Public Health by Amyn A. Malik and colleagues from UT Southwestern Medical Center, USA. Surveys have shown that the U.S. population's confidence in public health institutions has declined since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the United States in 2020. This study is one of the first scientific works to examine the perceptions of U.S. adults toward health institutions longitudinally from 2020 to 2024. From February 2020 to October 2024, the authors conducted four surveys with a sample of...

Scientists discover unknown organelles in our cells

  • News

The discovery of an unknown organelle in our cells could open the door to new treatments for devastating inherited diseases. The organelle, a type of specialized structure, has been named "hemifusome" by its discoverers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. This small organelle has the important job of helping our cells sort, recycle, and excrete important cargo within themselves, according to the scientists. The new discovery could help scientists better understand what goes wrong in genetic diseases that disrupt these vital functions. "It's like discovering a new recycling center in the cell," said researcher Dr. Seham Ebrahim of UVA's Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. "We believe the hemifusome helps control the packaging and processing of material in cells. When this goes wrong, it can contribute to diseases,...

The silence of the Governing Mayor: Kai Wegner's ignorance of the Ludwig Hoffmann Elementary School in Friedrichshain

The Ludwig-Hoffmann-Elementary School in Berlin-Friedrichshain is facing closure. A petition on Change.org, which has already found numerous supporters, is desperately fighting for the preservation of the site on Lasdehner Straße. But while parents, teachers, and residents are loudly sounding the alarm, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) remains silent. This silence is not only a sign of political indifference but a betrayal of the children whose psychosocial development is endangered by the looming closure. The case of the Ludwig-Hoffmann-Elementary School exemplifies how political ignorance jeopardizes the future of the youngest. The Ludwig-Hoffmann-Elementary School is far more than a place of learning for the children in Friedrichshain. With its manageable size and family-like atmosphere, it offers a protected space where students receive individual support and develop a strong sense of community. This is invaluable, especially in an urban, often anonymous environment like Friedrichshain.…
