The new Chancellor of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has been announced – internationally recognised humanitarian leader Elhadj As Sy will officially take up his post later this year at a ceremony.
‘As’ brings extensive experience in global health, development and humanitarian aid, and is currently Chair of the Kofi Annan Foundation and former Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. He has also held leadership roles at UNICEF, the United Nations and The Global Fund.
On accepting the role, As said: “It is unacceptable that tropical diseases continue to be neglected. LSTM is responding to this call through education and research to save lives and alleviate suffering for the most vulnerable and hardest-to-reach people, and I am honoured and highly motivated to be its first Chancellor.”
The role of Chancellor replaces that of President, most recently held by Sir Richard Evans CBE, who retired earlier this year.
