First clinical application of Johnson & Johnson MedTech's OTTAVA™ robotic system

New Brunswick, April 14, 2025 – Johnson & Johnson MedTech has achieved a significant breakthrough in surgical robotics: the first cases of a clinical trial using the OTTAVA™ robotic system have been successfully completed. The surgeries took place at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where a renowned surgeon performed a gastric bypass procedure.

The OTTAVA system, designed for minimally invasive soft tissue surgery, aims to enable a wide range of procedures, including complex upper abdominal interventions such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, small bowel resection, and hiatal hernia repair. The study is intended to demonstrate the system's versatility to achieve regulatory approval in the U.S.

Johnson & Johnson MedTech emphasizes the system's innovative strength, characterized by a unique architecture, specialized instruments and future connectivity to a digital ecosystem. The company sees OTTAVA as part of its commitment to improving surgical care worldwide. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had already granted approval for the investigation of the system at the end of 2024.

The results of the study could have a lasting impact on the standards in robotic surgery and open up new possibilities for patients and surgeons.
