An investigation by the SRF consumer magazine "Kassensturz" on February 4, 2025, shows that laboratory analyses in Switzerland are significantly more expensive than abroad. A study commissioned by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) compared the prices of 45 common tests with those in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Result: In Switzerland, lab tests are on average 67.5 percent more expensive, even when higher wages, rents, and energy costs are taken into account. One example is the CRP test for inflammation diagnosis, which costs 4.08 francs abroad but 9.00 francs in Switzerland.
The health insurance association and the price supervisor are calling for a reduction in laboratory tariffs, as the high costs are burdening health insurance premiums. The price supervisor refers to an earlier study from 2022, which showed similar results, and sees potential savings of over 100 million francs. A national councilor emphasizes the need to act based on international comparisons. In contrast, the laboratory association denies that the tariffs are excessive. Health insurers emphasize that automation should reduce test costs, which is not reflected in the prices.
The debate about high laboratory costs in Switzerland will gain further momentum in light of rising healthcare costs.
