Neuropathy Action Foundation Releases White Paper on Advances in Neuropathy Research

The US-based patient organization Neuropathy Action Foundation (NAF) has presented a comprehensive white paper titled "Clinical Trials for Neuropathy: Looking Ahead." The document provides an up-to-date overview of the status of clinical research in peripheral neuropathy, describes new therapeutic approaches, and explains why the active participation of patients remains crucial for further progress.

The paper categorizes currently ongoing and planned studies into four major areas: conventional drugs and biologics, regenerative and gene therapy approaches, nerve stimulation devices, and digital technologies such as virtual reality applications and wearables. The NAF places particular emphasis on innovative developments like precision medicine, the use of artificial intelligence in study design, and new, accelerated study designs that can potentially shorten the time to market.

Despite these positive developments, the organization warns of a decline in public research funding in the US. While the pharmaceutical industry invested more than $200 billion in research and development in 2024, cuts in the government budget have noticeably reduced funds for neuropathy-specific projects. This increases the pressure on private funding and on patients' willingness to participate in studies.

Another focus of the white paper is the lack of representation of certain population groups in clinical studies. Older adults, women, and members of ethnic minorities are significantly underrepresented – mostly for practical reasons such as lack of transportation, language barriers, or insufficient information about ongoing studies. The NAF emphasizes that more inclusive studies are not only scientifically but also ethically necessary to ensure that future therapies are actually effective and safe for all patient groups.

The white paper is aimed at patients, their families, doctors, and caregivers and is intended to promote dialogue about clinical studies. It is available for free download on the organization's website starting immediately.
