TBE: Ticks in Germany now active year-round

The effects of climate change on the spread of tick-borne diseases such as TBE (Tick-Borne Encephalitis) and Lyme disease in Germany are becoming increasingly apparent. Current data show that average temperatures in Germany continue to rise. For example, the annual average temperature in 2024 was 10.5°C according to the German Weather Service, which is 2.3°C above the reference value for the years 1961-1990[1]. This trend continues in 2025, with mild winters and longer periods of warm weather. The rising temperatures have direct impacts on the activity and distribution of ticks, particularly the species Ixodes ricinus, the main vector for TBE and Lyme disease. Experts observe that ticks are now active year-round and no longer take a winter break[2]. This leads to an extended transmission season for tick-borne diseases. New study sheds light on lily toxicity in cats

Eine kürzlich im Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association ( JAVMA ) veröffentlichte Studie hat neue Erkenntnisse zur Behandlung von Katzen gewonnen, die giftigen Lilien ausgesetzt waren, und gibt Tierbesitzern, die mit dieser weit verbreiteten Haushaltsgefahr konfrontiert sind, Hoffnung. Die Studie untersuchte den Ausgang bei 112 Katzen, die nach Lilienexposition behandelt wurden. Dabei wurden Katzen, die stationär mit intravenösen Flüssigkeiten behandelt wurden, mit Katzen verglichen, die ambulant mit subkutanen Flüssigkeiten behandelt wurden. Entgegen früherer Annahmen stellte die Studie keinen signifikanten Unterschied in der Prävalenz von akutem Nierenversagen (AKI) zwischen stationären (46,9 %) und ambulanten (43,8 %) Patienten fest. Dies widerlegt die lange vorherrschende Annahme, dass bei Katzen, die Lilien ausgesetzt waren, immer ein Krankenhausaufenthalt mit intravenöser Flüssigkeitszufuhr notwendig ist, und stellt einen bedeutenden Fortschritt im Verständnis und in der Behandlung von Lilienvergiftungen bei Katzen dar, der möglicherweise die Behandlungsmöglichkeiten…
