NIH launches research network to evaluate emerging cancer screening technologies

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a clinical trials network to evaluate emerging technologies for cancer screening. The Cancer Screening Research Network (CSRN) will support the Biden-Harris administration’s Cancer Moonshot? by investigating how to identify cancers earlier, when they may be easier to treat. Eight groups have received funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of NIH, to carry out the initial activities of the network. In 2024, the network will launch a pilot study, known as the Vanguard Study on Multi-Cancer Detection, to address the feasibility of using multi-cancer detection (MCD) tests in future randomized controlled trials. MCDs are blood tests that can screen for several types of cancers. The study will enroll up to 24,000 people to inform the design of a much larger randomized controlled trial. This larger trial will evaluate whether the benefits…

IQWiG study: AMNOG takes effect with a time delay

For orphan drugs, the political goal of aligning the price with the additional benefit is only achieved through the subsequent regular benefit assessment. This is shown by a current IQWiG analysis. To promote the development of drugs for rare diseases (orphan drugs) despite economic risks, they are treated preferentially in Germany: New orphan drugs only have to demonstrate an additional benefit compared to the appropriate comparator therapy if they exceed the annual sales limit of 30 million euros (up to November 2022: 50 million euros). Previously, their additional benefit is considered proven, and the Gemeinsame Bundesausschuss (G-BA) merely quantifies the extent of the additional benefit based on the (marketing authorization) documents. If, within the scope of this "limited assessment," no classification into the categories "minor," "considerable," or "substantial" is possible, the G-BA must still attest a "non-quantifiable" additional benefit to the active ingredient. The Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) has now analyzed the impact of this preferential treatment of orphan drugs on the prices of...
