PFAS: High Health Risk for Babies

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) pose a significant health hazard to babies. These synthetic chemicals, also known as "forever chemicals," can affect infant development and well-being in various ways. Exposure and Transmission Babies are exposed to PFAS even before birth. These chemicals can cross the placental barrier, moving from the maternal bloodstream to the fetal circulation[4]. After birth, exposure continues through breastfeeding, as PFAS have been detected in breast milk[2][4]. Effects on Fetal Growth Studies have shown that increased maternal PFAS exposure is associated with lower birth weight in newborns[4]. This may be due to alterations in fatty acid metabolism, possibly through the activation of the nuclear receptor PPAR[4].
