AI can predict pressure ulcer risk in hospital patients 

The new AI risk assessment model published today in BMJ Open increases prediction accuracy to more than 74% – an increase of more than 20% over existing methods. Common practices and guidelines for preventing pressure ulcers are time-consuming and burdensome for bedside nursing staff. The industry-standard tool for predicting pressure ulcer risk, the paper-based Braden Scale, has not changed since its introduction in the 1980s and has an accuracy rate of 54%, researchers note. The prediction algorithm developed by the team offers improved cost-effectiveness and significant savings. Since a risk assessment can take between five and 15 minutes per patient, this can mean up to 250 work hours per day and between 30,000 and 90,000 work hours per year in a single 500-bed facility. A recently published study shows that Europe is facing a crisis due to a significant decline in the availability of generic drugs. Teva Pharmaceuticals, the world's largest manufacturer of generic drugs, claims in its study that the number of generics withdrawn from the market has increased by 12%, while the introduction of new generics has decreased by an average of 3% per year. In 2012, there were 40,280 different generics in Europe. However, just over a decade later, this number has fallen to only 29,836 generics, a considerable decrease of 26%. mRNA drug to lower blood lipids

According to a placebo-controlled, double-blind study led by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, an experimental treatment may further lower blood triglycerides. The findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology 2024 Scientific Session & Expo and simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the study, 154 adults receiving lipid-lowering therapy with moderate-to-severe hypertriglyceridemia were randomized to receive either 50 mg of Olezarsen, 80 mg of Olezarsen, or placebo. While it is common to bring food samples to a laboratory to determine the type and amount of bacteria that grow in a petri dish over a period of several days, a research team at Osaka Metropolitan University has developed a portable device for rapid on-site detection.
