FDA Roundup: April 9, 2024

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is providing an at-a-glance summary of news from around the agency: U.S. Food and Drug Administration 09 Apr, 2024, 15:31 ET On Friday, the FDA authorized for marketing MMI North America, Inc.’s Symani Surgical System, indicated for use during certain microsurgical procedures on small blood vessels and lymphatic ducts in adults. The system includes the use of a motion scaling function, which scales down the surgeon’s movements. Microsurgery covers procedures involving the use of microscopes and small instruments to perform small-scale surgical techniques. The system is intended for use by trained physicians in the operating environments described in the device’s labeling. On Friday, the FDA granted accelerated approval to fam-trastuzumab deruxtecan-nxki (Enhertu, Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.) for adult patients with unresectable or metastatic HER2-positive (IHC3+) solid tumors who have received prior systemic treatment and…

AI can predict pressure ulcer risk in hospital patients

The new AI risk assessment model published today in BMJ Open increases prediction accuracy to more than 74% – an increase of more than 20% over existing methods. Common practices and guidelines for preventing pressure ulcers are time-consuming and burdensome for bedside nursing staff. The industry-standard tool for predicting pressure ulcer risk, the paper-based Braden Scale, has not changed since its introduction in the 1980s and has an accuracy rate of 54%, researchers note. The prediction algorithm developed by the team offers improved cost-effectiveness and significant savings. Since a risk assessment can take between five and 15 minutes per patient, this can mean up to 250 work hours per day and between 30,000 and 90,000 work hours per year in a single 500-bed facility. Using machine learning methods, researchers have analyzed the electronic health records of…

Crisis due to decline in European generics

  • News

A recently published study shows that Europe is facing a crisis due to a significant decline in the availability of generic drugs. Teva Pharmaceuticals, the world's largest manufacturer of generic drugs, claims in its study that the number of generics withdrawn from the market has increased by 12%, while the introduction of new generics has decreased by an average of 3% per year. In 2012, there were 40,280 different generics in Europe. However, just over a decade later, this number has fallen to only 29,836 generics, a considerable decrease of 26%. The Teva study, "The Critical Medicines Health Check," warns of escalating health challenges across Europe, pointing to antimicrobial resistance – adding that there are 31% fewer antibiotic medicines in the region today than there were ten years ago, with the number of...

mRNA drug to lower blood lipids

According to a placebo-controlled, double-blind study led by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, an experimental treatment may further lower blood triglycerides. The findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology 2024 Scientific Session & Expo and simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the study, 154 adults receiving lipid-lowering therapy with moderate-to-severe hypertriglyceridemia were randomized to receive either 50 mg of Olezarsen, 80 mg of Olezarsen, or placebo. Olezarsen is an antisense oligonucleotide that inhibits APOC3, a gene linked to higher triglyceride levels by targeting its mRNA. The subcutaneous drug was administered every four weeks for one year. Compared to placebo, Olezarsen lowered triglyceride levels by 49% at the 50-mg dose and by...

Clarius and ThinkSono Introduce a New AI-Guided Ultrasound System Enabling Rapid Assessments of DVTs

Clarius Mobile Health, a leading provider of high-definition handheld ultrasound systems, and ThinkSono, a pioneering medical technology company specializing in ultrasound artificial intelligence (AI) guidance solutions, are introducing a new AI-guided ultrasound system in Europe, which will improve the efficiency of detecting deep vein thrombosis (DVT). ThinkSono Guidance, an AI App that pairs with Clarius ultrasound scanners, recently attained Class llb CE mark regulatory approval. DVT is a blood clot found commonly in the leg and is a leading cause of preventable hospital death in Europe and the United States. Patients often wait for hours or days for test results performed by ultrasound-trained clinicians.

Brain cancer community gets help in accessing clinical trials

  • News

myTomorrows, a global health technology company connecting patients with all possible treatment options, today announced a new partnership with brainstrust, a UK-based charity that helps people living with a brain tumor reach their potential and thrive. Under the new partnership, people with brain tumors will be equipped with the means to bolster their knowledge of relevant treatment options, potentially extending to participation in clinical trials and access to pre-approval drugs. Moreover, the partnership provides a new layer of support to clinicians in their efforts to recruit patients to relevant clinical trials. There are 80,000 people living with a brain tumor in England alone, with a patient receiving a diagnosis every two hours. Brain tumors kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, and incidences and deaths from brain tumors are on the rise. With…

Handheld sensor enables simultaneous detection of multiple bacteria

  • News

When you hear the words E. coli or Salmonella, you immediately think of food poisoning. Rapid detection of such bacteria is crucial for preventing foodborne outbreaks. While it is common to bring food samples to a laboratory to determine the type and amount of bacteria that grow in a petri dish over a period of several days, a research team at Osaka Metropolitan University has developed a portable device for rapid on-site detection. Led by Professor Hiroshi Shiigi of the Graduate School of Engineering, the team experimented with a biosensor that can detect multiple pathogenic bacteria simultaneously within an hour. “The palm-sized detection device can be connected to a smartphone app to easily check the degree of bacterial contamination,” explained Professor Shiigi. His team synthesized organic-metal nanohybrids of gold and copper that mutually ...
