German Health System Faces Fuel Buffer But Pharma Risks in Hormuz Blockade
BERLIN, April 12 (LabNews.io) – Germany’s healthcare system could maintain core operations including hospital power and emergency services for up to 90 days in the event of a prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, thanks to mandatory strategic oil reserves, but pharmaceutical supply chains face earlier disruptions from rising costs and potential shortages of key raw materials. Germany holds emergency petroleum stocks managed by the Erdölbevorratungsverband (EBV) equivalent to at least 90 days of net imports of crude oil and refined products, in line with EU and International Energy Agency requirements. These include significant volumes of diesel, heating oil and kerosene, stored decentralised across the country for rapid access.
