Women veterans at higher risk for repeat suicide attempts

In a new study, Oregon Health & Science University researchers find that women veterans who had recently attempted suicide were more likely than men to feel social rejection and betrayed by military institutions. They also reported feeling less independent and compassionate toward themselves. The findings, recently published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, suggest that women veterans may be at higher risk of repeat suicide attempts. It’s the first longitudinal—meaning following individuals over time—national study aimed at understanding how psychosocial symptoms change over time among veterans who recently attempted suicide; it’s also the first to specifically focus on differences between genders in the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Biomarkers discovered in 2024

Several biomarkers were discovered in 2024 across various diseases and conditions. Here are some examples: 1. Parkinson’s Disease Biomarker: Researchers discovered a new biomarker for Parkinson’s disease, which can detect the disease in both people with Parkinson’s and individuals not yet diagnosed or exhibiting symptoms but at high risk of developing it. The assay, called the ?-synuclein seeding amplification assay (?Syn-SAA), targets a protein found in the nervous system called alpha synuclein[3][6][12]. 2. Hepatocellular Carcinoma Biomarkers: A thesis on biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma identified a new protein, thioredoxin reductase 1 (TXNRD1), which can be used for screening and predicting the risk of recurrence after surgical treatment[2]. 3. Cardiovascular Disease Biomarkers: A study discovered transcriptomic biomarkers associated with cardiovascular disease, including genes linked to cardiomyopathy, stroke, and atherosclerosis[5]. 4. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Biomarkers: Researchers found that blood-based measures, including levels…
